LAB van Abbema

There is Jelte van Abbema’s project Symbiosis, in which he grows bacteria on a poster, this way gradually revealing the image. The MoMA did not dare to release the bacteria in the museum itself, which is why Symbiosis can be seen at the online exhibition. Van Abbema’s project is typical for current Dutch design in several ways. It is conceptual, pioneering, and not necessarily aimed at making a marketable product. In his project, Van Abbema investigates the possibilities of bacteria in visual culture. For that purpose, he consulted microbiologists and learned to grow bacteria. All this has little to do with traditional graphic design.
